Actions that change the world for a sustainable future do not necessarily have to be huge. In fact, small gestures from each of us every day would be enough to bring greater results to everyone. No person is too small to impact our planet. It is from small things that big things grow.
We all want to do our best for our planet and humanity, but sometimes we lack inspiration, time, or simply forget. As a practical guide, we have compiled a list of 20 tips you can follow for a more sustainable future and to be the change you want to see in the world.
- Don't accept disposable cutlery like forks, chopsticks or even plastic straws! If you can't give up straws, use washable metal or bamboo ones.
- Use cold water when washing clothes (the clothes will last longer, by the way) and always do a full load.
- Use washable cloths instead of paper napkins or tissues.
- Install a water-saving shower and take short showers. Bathtubs use much more water than a few minutes of showering.
- Collect rainwater and reuse it to water your garden or wash your car or bike.
- Avoid buying single-serving foods, such as vegetables packaged in plastic, or, if you really have to, buy minimally packaged products.
- Cycle, walk, or take public transportation to work. Keep the car for group travel.
- Use as little paper as possible. For example, use Microsoft Notes instead of a notebook and avoid printing documents.
- Avoid having paper bank statements sent to you and pay your bills online or by mobile.
- Let your hair and clothes air dry naturally instead of using a hair dryer.
- Freeze fresh produce and leftovers if you can't eat them before they go bad. You'll save food and money.
- Compost your food scraps to reduce your climate impact while recycling nutrients.
- If you can, install solar panels on your home. This will also reduce your electricity bill.
- Choose local stores. Supporting local businesses keeps people employed and helps keep trucks from traveling long distances.
- Buy “imperfect” fruit: Many fruits and vegetables are thrown away because their size, shape, or color is “not right.” In reality, even if they are not beautiful, these products are still great and should not be wasted.
- Use glass bottles for water and ceramic cups for coffee. You will reduce waste and save money at the bar.
- Say no to plastic bags, but use reusable bags when you go shopping.
- Buy secondhand. Newer isn't necessarily better. See what you can repurpose from secondhand stores or online stores like Facebook Marketplace.
- Find out if you have a local toy collection center and rent toys for your kids instead of buying them, saving money and unwanted clutter. Do the same with books.
- Avoid using disposable wet wipes. Instead, use a cleanser and a damp cloth.
